Foreign bodies

Whenever I tell people that I'm due in June, they often say, "Oh, you timed it right! You'll miss being pregnant in the summer! Good for you!" I can totally see that—I don't think being pregnant in the summer would be very fun.

But you know what? It pretty much sucks in the winter, too. I'm now sick for the THIRD TIME this season. I wish someone would have told me earlier that the immune system of a pregnant woman is suppressed in order to make sure that the fetus isn't rejected as a foreign body. I guess there's not much I could have done about it, but as I've now written on two other occasions, being sick during pregnancy sucks. Not being able to take medicine sucks. So far I only have a sore throat and laryngitis (that's going to take over my whole vocal apparatus by tomorrow or Friday, I think), but even the lost voice thing (which I used to think was just kind of funny) is really wearing on me. For some reason, I keep getting myself in these situations where I have to talk a lot even though I have very little voice, and it gets old after about 20 seconds. I'm sure that interview I did today for that journalism student is going to be just awesome in its final form.

In other baby-related news, we saw our 4 day old nephew for the first time tonight! My sister-in-law just had her baby, and we went over to cook them dinner tonight. They seemed surprisingly tranquil for people who just got back from the hospital on Sunday night. We weren't there that long, but the visit was pretty helpful to my own peace of mind (I hope it helped them out too!). I think we'll be able to do this!

While late spring/early summer is a very nice time to have a baby (both because you're not huge while the weather is hot & gross and it's easy to get out with baby--just a onesie, hat, and sling and you're good), I love the idea that these things can be "timed" in the "right" way as opposed to just dumb luck/divine intervention (depending on your POV).
